It contains a rubber-like valve called a diaphragm, and the mechanism works by the diaphragm pumping fuel back and forth due to the pulsations from the crankcase caused by engine compression.
If the diaphragm hardens due to aging or old fuel, rust occurs due to fuel depletion, or debris enters and blocks the internal passages of the pump, causing it to stop pumping fuel, it is most reliable and quickest to replace the entire fuel pump assembly.
This is a relatively common problem, so it's a good idea to have one on hand in case of trouble, especially for older model motorcycles.
