Recently, Kazunori Seo, active as a pianist and producer, has released a work that questions the true value of the flute, the original instrument, through unaccompanied pieces.
The selected works mainly include Karg-Elert’s "30 Capricci," along with modern pieces by Dohnányi and Hindemith, and an arrangement by Seo himself of the Chaconne from J.S. Bach’s Partita No. 2 for unaccompanied violin. The Hindemith piece "Canonic Sonatina," performed with two flutes, features participation by his mentor Patrick Gallois. This results in a luxurious and engaging album.
Karg-Elert was a late Romantic German organist and composer. He composed many works for wind instruments, and notably during World War I, he left important works for flute after befriending Carl Bartuzat, a flutist in the Leipzig Gewandhaus military band. The "30 Capricci" subtitle "Gradus ad Parnassum - Steps to Mount Parnassus" refers to a collection of etudes meant to develop high-level skills, metaphorically climbing the sacred mountain of art and learning step by step.
For flute lovers, this is an essential work to listen to.
The tense music in Bach’s Chaconne at the end is also a highlight.

About the Artist

Kazunori Seo, Flute
In 1998, after graduating top of his class from the Paris Conservatory, Seo quickly gained recognition as a soloist after winning or placing in successive international competitions including Nielsen, Rampal, France, and Geneva. He has performed actively in Japan, Europe, North and South America, China, Taiwan, and Korea.
In Japan, since his debut in 1999 performing Ibert’s Flute Concerto with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, he has been invited as a soloist by various orchestras including the Tokyo City Philharmonic, New Japan Philharmonic, Japan Philharmonic, Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra, Sapporo Symphony, Osaka Philharmonic, Hiroshima Symphony, and Kyushu Symphony, performing a wide repertoire from baroque to contemporary concertos. In 2006, he premiered a flute concerto composed for him by French composer Henri-Jean Schubnel with Sinfonia Finlandia. In 2016, he was invited by the emerging Hamburg-based string ensemble "Ensemble Resonance" for a Japan tour as a soloist. In 2020, he performed Penderecki’s flute concerto with the prestigious Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra in Russia, among many other collaborations with overseas orchestras.
He is also active in recording, debuting with the NAXOS label and releasing 11 CDs to date. After recording with Erato/Warner Music, he established two CD labels, "Les Menestrels" and "Virtus Classics," producing his own recordings and working as a recording producer.
Recently, he has expanded his activities beyond flute performance to include collaborations as a pianist, performing duo recitals and recordings with his mentor Patrick Gallois. He also serves as music director of the Akiyoshidai Music Academy (Yamaguchi Prefecture) and as a visiting associate professor at Nagoya University of the Arts. He has received awards including the Kyoto Arts Festival Prize (1999), Kitakyushu Citizens’ Culture Award (2000), and Fukuoka Prefectural Culture Award (2004).
