About the Artist
*This concert, held on March 18, 1975, was actually released privately in several forms in the past. Beethoven's and Schubert's works were released on LP by the DISCOCORP and ROCOCO labels. Two Debussy pieces, "Hommage à Rameau" from "Images" Book I and "Cloches à travers les feuilles" from "Images" Book II, were released on CD by the THEATRE label. All of these were unofficial releases and had poor sound quality.
● Beethoven
In this Bern recital, the sense of presence is so pleasant, as if Michelangeli (ABM) were performing right in front of you. The beauty of the granular tone is superb. The smooth movement of his hands seems visible.
ABM's tone is extremely bright. At times, his performances of Beethoven's works have been criticized for diminishing the gloominess inherent in Beethoven's music.
However, listening to this performance, he creates darkness with a bright tone, doesn't he? Indeed, the performance created by an artist in front of an audience should be called the true form of an artist, the true performance.
● Debussy
One of ABM's technical characteristics is the way sounds fade away. It's as if you are present at the moment someone takes their last breath. That part is unbearably beautiful. And you can even picture the audience watching that moment intently.
● Schubert
ABM's DG studio recordings have a note stating that he performed on a piano over 60 years old. Given ABM's particularity about pianos, this note is unlikely to be a statement of dissatisfaction.
