Fukumitsu ware is fired twice a year in a climbing kiln using firewood. Because it is fired slowly over time, it is well-fired and durable.
The white glaze is fired by mixing rice straw, rice stalks, and ash from clouds. The white glaze changes in color and luster with use, and its atmosphere evolves. Please enjoy the changing scenery of the pottery as you use it.
Fukumitsu Ware (Fukumitsu Yaki)
I am a craftsman. I entered this path because I love making things. The process from pulling the clay to firing it on a kick wheel is very demanding work. Each time I take the pieces out of the kiln, I reflect on many things, such as color, balance, and ease of use. I receive so much from the climbing kiln. Once the kiln is fired, I cannot leave it, and I feed the firewood as if commanded by the kiln. Until the work is complete, I am always thinking about how to pull it out, where to stop, and how to expand it. Once clay is fired, it takes a very long time to return to the earth. Is it not a way for us who use clay to express our gratitude by never treating it carelessly?
My wish for my "children," the pottery, is to finish and "nurture" them from beginning to end. I am dedicated to my craft, hoping that the pottery I create will be useful in bringing peace and comfort to your lives.
