Sensual and intoxicating ecstasy: Mahler's 9th & Strauss's "Death and Transfiguration" by Sinopoli & Dresden. When speaking of him, who met a dramatic end, the ultimate repertoire that first comes to mind is undoubtedly Mahler, known for his complete recordings with the Philharmonia Orchestra (1985-1994) and his subsequent "Das Lied von der Erde" (1996) with the Dresden Staatskapelle. The 9th Symphony, recorded a little over three years after the studio version. The deeply emotional approach, based on extreme tempo rubato, has deepened further, unfolding an indescribably aesthetic world. In any case, while Sinopoli's strong individuality is undeniable, the orchestra's unfathomable potential, which is "incredibly precise and richly expressive," is truly astonishing. Judging from the content heard here, Sinopoli and the Dresden Staatskapelle must have produced even more terrifyingly intense music, and his sudden death is deeply regrettable.
