Product description
This product features a delicate pattern created using a technique called bag weaving, which involves a higher number of warp threads. Because the pattern is complex with bends, long pieces of Igusa are used; if shorter, they may tear. The warp threads are densely woven, making the product sturdy and resistant to tearing. Additionally, by weaving five layers, the product achieves enhanced durability, volume, and an overwhelming presence.
Unlike standard mats, which are woven with two layers and can only display two colors in a straight line, five-layer weaving allows for five colors, resulting in more vivid and intricate patterns. The warp threads are approximately 1.3 times thicker than those used in typical domestically produced mats, providing excellent durability and a clear surface appearance.
The hem fabric uses Kurume weaving, a traditional textile from Kurume in Fukuoka Prefecture, often used in kimono and Western clothing, making it a valuable and rare fabric. Producing a five-layer woven product requires particularly skilled craftsmanship; only a limited number of artisans can weave it. Consequently, only about 6 to 7 pieces can be produced per day, making it a rare item.
The Igusa used is domestically produced in Kyushu. Each stalk is thick, with a coarse outer skin and fine fibers, providing elasticity and excellent durability. Igusa has natural air-purifying and humidity-regulating properties. It is also resistant to dirt, and over time, it develops a golden hue, adding character. The Igusa is treated with Aomori Hiba (Japanese cypress) processing for antibacterial and deodorizing effects.
The backing is made of non-woven fabric, providing moderate cushioning, making it suitable for use on flooring.
