This is a unique Japanese rush mat (tatami mat cover) with a checkered pattern only on the edges. Simply laying this cover over your tatami mats will refresh the room. Use it to refresh tatami mats that have been discolored by sunlight, or as a cover to protect new tatami mats from getting dirty. The manufacturer has modified their looms with proprietary technology to express the checkered pattern using only the natural colors and weave of the material. This product is recommended for those who find plain tatami mat covers uninspired and desire something more luxurious. It uses domestic Japanese rush (from Yatsushiro, Kumamoto Prefecture), approximately 115-120 cm in length, of which about 95 cm is used. Normally, the edges of the rush tend to be whitish. (This is not due to sun exposure, but is the color of the root and tip of the rush.) This characteristic, where the root and tip of the rush have different colors, is utilized to create the checkered pattern. (Therefore, the checkered pattern is only formed within the range of the whitish root portion. The center part will be plain.) Longer rush is considered more valuable. The tip of the rush is reddish-brown, the root is white, and the middle part is blue (green). Domestic Japanese rush (from Yatsushiro, Kumamoto Prefecture) is used. Domestic rush is thick, has a thick outer skin, and fine fibers, making it elastic and durable. Japanese rush has the properties of purifying air, regulating humidity, and being resistant to dirt. "Hiba essence," extracted from Hiba trees in Aomori Prefecture, has been applied to the fabric surface using the manufacturer's proprietary technology. Hiba essence contains a natural substance called hinokitiol, which has extremely high antibacterial properties. (Compared to untreated products, it has antibacterial and deodorizing effects.) Both sides of the mat can be used, making it economical. *Please note that as this is a natural material and is processed by artisans one by one by hand, there may be variations in shape and slight differences from the stated size.
