Product Description

This is a unique tatami mat cover (uguisu) featuring a checkered pattern only along the edges. Simply laying this cover over your tatami mats can refresh the room. Use it to refresh tatami mats that have faded from sun exposure, or as a protective cover to keep new tatami mats clean. The manufacturer has modified their looms with proprietary technology to create the checkered pattern using only the natural colors and weave of the material. This product is recommended for those who find plain tatami covers uninspired and desire a more luxurious feel. It uses domestic igusa (from Yatsushiro, Kumamoto Prefecture), approximately 110-115 cm in length, with about 88 cm of this length being utilized. Typically, the edges of the igusa have a strong whitish hue. (This is not due to sun fading, but is the natural color of the root and tip ends of the igusa.) This characteristic, where the root and tip ends of the igusa have different colors, is utilized to create the checkered pattern. (Therefore, the checkered pattern is only formed within the range of the white root portion. The center section will be plain.) Longer igusa is considered higher quality. The tip of the igusa is reddish-brown, the root is white, and the middle section is blue (green). Domestic igusa (from Yatsushiro, Kumamoto Prefecture) is used. Domestic igusa is thick, has a dense fiber structure with a thick outer layer, providing elasticity and excellent durability. Igusa has properties such as air purification, humidity regulation, and is resistant to dirt. The fabric surface has been treated with "Hiba Essence," extracted from Aomori Hiba trees, using the manufacturer's proprietary technology. Hiba Essence contains a natural substance called hinokitiol, which has extremely high antibacterial properties. (Compared to untreated products, it offers antibacterial and deodorizing effects.) Both sides of the mat can be used, making it economical. *Please note that as this is a natural material and is processed by artisans one by one by hand, there may be variations in shape and slight differences from the stated size. Thank you for your understanding.
