Kyoto Awataguchi Kiyonobu Craftsmanship:
Kyoto 12-go, pure silk, red thread, full horn, black lacquered small plates, hand-forged long tachi, hand-carved Toba feather tachi shape, Kyoto-made with dragon head, Kyoto-made Tansu chest, Kyoto-made hand-painted folding screen "Cherry Blossoms in the Moon," genuine hawk feather, genuine wisteria-wrapped bow and sword.

The making of armor requires the traditional handcrafting techniques and materials that have been passed down through generations. If these are sourced overseas, it may be possible to lower the price.
However, the finished product may become less valuable than the reduced price suggests.

Since the era of previous generations, skilled artisans have built mutual trust, but recently many have gone out of business, leading to concerns about the loss of traditional techniques.
Handmade production naturally results in small quantities, which inevitably makes the prices higher.
Nevertheless, there are customers who purchase and cherish these items, which encourages us daily.
We are very pleased to have such relationships with our customers.

— Kiyonobu Awataguchi —
A swordsmith from Kyoto Awataguchi, descending from the Sanjo Kotachi Munemitsu tradition. The renowned master, Sanjo Kotachi Munemitsu, crafted the national treasure "Mikazuki Munechika," and is enshrined at the "Kaji Shrine," a subsidiary of Awata Shrine in Awataguchi.

Following the sword ban order, we shifted to creating decorative armor utilizing the skills cultivated in metalworking.
Kiyonobu Awataguchi’s armor is characterized by craftsmanship that is consistently handmade with meticulous attention to detail.

In 1989, he was recognized as a Traditional Craftsman designated by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
In 2001, he received the "Kyoto Master Craftsman" award from Kyoto Prefecture for outstanding traditional industry skills.
He has achieved remarkable success in numerous competitions and is a leading master in Kyoto’s armor-making community.

The feathers used in bows and swords are mainly selected for their beautiful patterns.
Sometimes, plain white waterfowl (duck) feathers printed with beautiful designs are used, but the types include owl, golden chicken, pheasant, and others.
Among these, the most rare and beautiful is the "hawk."
Hawks are considered symbols of the samurai spirit, and their noble, strong, and brave appearance was highly admired.

In arrow feathers, hawk (raptor) feathers were regarded as a mark of a warrior’s refinement, representing the owner’s dignity and symbolizing martial valor, and were reserved for high-ranking samurai.
Ordinary soldiers used miscellaneous feathers.
Even soldiers who were shot in battle felt a sense of honor from the feathers of their opponents’ hawks, making hawk feathers a noble possession.
