Pink Floyd's David Gilmour's new work 'Luck and Strange' after 9 years

'Luck and Strange' was recorded over more than 5 months in Brighton and London, and is the first album of all new songs by David Gilmour since 'Rattle That Lock' in 2015, 9 years ago. The production was handled by David Gilmour and Charlie Andrew (ALT-J and Marika Hackman, among others). It all started when David Gilmour was impressed by Charlie Andrew's production work with the indie band ALT-J, who had won the Mercury Prize, and sent him a direct message on Instagram. David Gilmour describes the new production process as follows: "I called Charlie to my house. He listened to some demos and said, 'By the way, why does there have to be a guitar solo in this part?' 'All fade out? Some just can't be ended?' He lacks the wonderful knowledge and respect for what I've done so far. He's very direct and completely unshrinking. That's what makes it great. For me, it's just very good. I just don't want to be told what to do.'" Most of the lyrics on the album are written by his wife Polly Samson, who has collaborated with David Gilmour over the past 30 years. Polly Samson comments on the theme of 'Luck and Strange': "It's written from the perspective of aging. The inevitability of death was constantly present." David Gilmour further states: "We spent a lot of time during and after the lockdown talking and thinking about those kinds of things." Polly Samson also says she was liberated by working with Charlie Andrew: "He wants to know the content of the songs, and everyone performing them wants to reflect the lyrics in their performance, and that worked very well." The album includes 8 new songs and a beautiful remake of 'Between Two Points' by the indie duo The Mongolfier Brothers from the early 2000s. The artwork and photos are by renowned artist Anton Corbijn. Musicians participating in this work include bassist Guy Pratt (who has participated in Pink Floyd recordings and tours since 1987), Tom Herbert, drummers Adam Betts and Steve Distanislao, keyboardists Rob Jentle and Roger Eno (brother of Brian Eno), string and chorus arranger Will Gardner, and legendary drummer Steve Gadd. The title track 'Luck and Strange' features the late Pink Floyd keyboardist Richard Wright, with recordings from a jam session at David Gilmour's barn in 2007 used. Some of the recordings come from live streaming 'Phone Trapped' performed by David Gilmour and his family during the 2020 and 2021 lockdowns for a global audience. His daughter Romany Gilmour performs vocals and harp, and appears as lead vocalist on 'Between Two Points.' His son Gabriel Gilmour also participates as backing vocalist. Additionally, his son Charlie Gilmour wrote the lyrics for the final track 'Scattered,' and the album jacket image, shot and designed by Anton Corbijn, was inspired by these lyrics.
Regarding working with family on 'Luck and Strange,' David Gilmour says: "Polly and I have been writing songs together for over 30 years, and during the 'Phone Trapped' live streaming, Romany's voice and harp playing showed a wonderful fusion. Through that, we were able to shed some of the past burdens I felt, throw away those rules, and do what we feel like doing. It's really fun."
