"Luck and Strange" was recorded over five months in Brighton and London, and is the first album of all-new songs by David Gilmour in 9 years, since "Rattle That Lock" in 2015. The album is produced by David Gilmour and Charlie Andrew (known for his work with ALT-J, Marika Hackman, and others). The collaboration began when David Gilmour, impressed by the production work of Charlie Andrew, producer for the Mercury Prize-winning indie band ALT-J, sent him a direct message on Instagram. David Gilmour describes the unprecedented new production process: "I invited Charlie to my house. He listened to some demos and said, 'Why does there have to be a guitar solo here?' 'Are they all fade-outs? Can't some of them just end?' He has a wonderful lack of knowledge and respect for what I've done. He's very direct, and not at all intimidated. That's the best thing. It's very good for me. I just don't want to be told what to do."
Most of the album's lyrics were written by Polly Samson, who has collaborated with David Gilmour for the past 30 years. Polly Samson speaks about the theme of "Luck and Strange": "It's written from the perspective of getting older. The inevitability of death was constant." David Gilmour adds, "We spent a lot of time discussing and thinking about these things during and after the lockdown." Polly Samson also mentions that working with Charlie Andrew allowed her to be more liberated: "He wants to know what the song is about, and everyone playing on the song is expected to reflect the lyrics in their performance, and it worked out very well."
In addition to 8 new songs, the album includes a beautiful remake of "Between Two Points" by the early 2000s indie duo The Mongrel Family. The artwork and photography are by renowned artist Anton Corbijn. Musicians participating in this work include Guy Pratt on bass (who has participated in Pink Floyd's recordings and tours since 1987) and Tom Herbert, Adam Betts and Steve Distanislao on drums, Rob Gerry and Roger Eno (brother of Brian Eno) on keyboards, Will Gardner who arranged strings and choruses, and legendary drummer Steve Gadd. The title track "Luck and Strange" also features the late Pink Floyd keyboardist Richard Wright, using recordings from a jam session held in a barn at David Gilmour's home in 2007. Those who appeared in the live streams "From Our House to Yours" performed by David Gilmour and his family for a global audience during the lockdowns of 2020 and 2021 are also included. His daughter Romany Gilmour handles vocals and harp, and takes the lead vocal on "Between Two Points." His son Gabriel Gilmour also participates with backing vocals. His son Charlie Gilmour wrote the lyrics for the album's final track "Scattered," and the album cover image, shot and designed by Anton Corbijn, was inspired by these lyrics.
Speaking about working with his family on "Luck and Strange," David Gilmour says: "Polly and I have been writing songs together for over 30 years, and during the 'From Our House to Yours' live streams, we saw a wonderful blend of Romany's voice and harp playing. It allowed us to shed some of the past that I felt constrained by, to throw those rules out the window and just do what felt right. It's been a lot of fun."
