This is a standing statue of Amida Nyorai, enshrined as the principal object of worship for the Jodo Shinshu Otani sect. The main object of worship in each sect is called the Gohonzon, representing the ideal Buddha, and it embodies the teachings of Buddhism in a tangible form. It is enshrined on the top central shelf of the Buddhist altar, from where the Buddha can watch over us from the highest position. The manufacturing of the Buddha statue involves some machinery, but most are finished by artisans' hands. Therefore, each piece has its own differences. The boxwood (Tuge) has a beautiful, smooth grain, and among the conditions for the Buddha, it is said that the skin should be smooth and glossy. In that sense, boxwood is a suitable material for Buddha statues. The technique of embedding glass beads into the face, known as "gan-iri," is a traditional technique dating back to the late Heian period.

The Buddha body, pedestal, and halo are packed separately. The Buddha body and halo are inserted into the pedestal. When cleaning, do not use cloth; instead, use a soft-bristled brush or a feather duster to remove dust. Also, do not use water, detergents, alcohol, or thinner.
The Buddha statue and pedestal are fixed for enshrinement but are not glued, so please be careful not to drop them during cleaning, such as supporting the Buddha body.
