"The Legend of Queen - Rock Montreal 1981" captures the performance of this world-renowned rock band at the very peak of their live power. The footage, filmed and recorded in Montreal, Canada, in 1981, has previously been released on Blu-ray and DVD, but a newly remastered version with 12-channel surround sound for IMAX, clearer visuals, and improved audio quality has been digitally restored and was limitedly screened at IMAX theaters worldwide, including the UK and US, from January this year. It set a record-breaking global box office revenue of $4.1 million (about 600 million yen) in just four days, leading to an extension of the screening period and receiving a great response. This IMAX version was also released in Japan in February of this year at 50 IMAX theaters nationwide for a limited time, achieving great success. Using the latest technology, a Blu-ray set of two discs featuring digitally restored visuals and audio has been announced.
The concert held over two nights on November 24 and 25, 1981, at the 18,000-capacity venue "Forum" in Montreal, Canada, was recorded for a long-form concert film documenting Queen’s live performance. Director Saul Swimmer used cutting-edge double anamorphic lenses and 35mm film at the time, enabling screenings on a giant screen equivalent to five stories high. To ensure the highest resolution, the original 35mm negative was scanned, inspected frame by frame, and cleaned of dirt, damage, and seams. The image clarity and quality were enhanced, and for the first time in history, the footage was recorded in both full frame and widescreen formats. The full-screen aspect ratio closely resembles the original filming method, while the widescreen version is a carefully cropped alternative to fill a 16:9 ratio.
In addition to the digitally restored Montreal performance, this package also includes Queen’s legendary 21-minute performance at Live Aid, one of the most famous moments in rock and roll history. This performance has been upgraded to high resolution for the first time, with the latest stereo, 5.1, and Dolby Atmos sound mixes used.
