The Sun Will Rise Again [Gretchen Parlato] ■ Gretchen Parlato's latest album, which has evolved further musically and artistically from her previous work "Fleur," is a collaboration with guitarist Lionel Loueke from Benin, West Africa, who played a key role in her debut album "gretchen parlato," released the year after she won the Thelonious Monk Competition in 2004. Lionel Loueke has performed with Herbie Hancock, Esperanza Spalding, Miho Harada, and others, and in 2012 appeared on Robert Glasper's produced album "Heritage," as well as as a member of the Blue Note All Stars led by Glasper (2017), and on Hancock's collection "HH" (2020) and "HH Reimagined" by Jiles Peterson (2022 fall), demonstrating his unique presence worldwide. He has been a close friend of Gretchen since her time at the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, and this long-awaited full-fledged collaboration is finally realized. ■ Gretchen's profound vocals, excellent sense of rhythm, and Lionel's various percussive guitar techniques, combined with vocals using characteristic click sounds from Southern Africa, create an organic ensemble filled with the highest level of modern jazz musical skill. Recording took place from February to April 2022 in LA. Both perform percussion, with additional participation from Mark Guiliana (drums, Pesc) and Burniss Travis (bass). Their son Marley Guiliana also contributes vocals on three tracks, effectively incorporating high-affinity African music elements through children's voices into the ensemble. ■ The track list includes covers of hit songs from the 80s and 90s by the female R&B group Climax (M2), a famous song "Samba Da Pergunta" sung by Elis Regina in her 1969 masterpiece "Como É Que Por Que" (M5), Gretchen's own first album's track "Nonvignon" (M8), and a cover from The Foo Fighters' 1997 album "The Colour and the Shape" (M12). The original songs by the two artists, including collaborations with Mark Guiliana and others, express a superb world where African groove, Brazilian music, jazz, and more blend seamlessly.
