Kutani Ware Incense Burner: Arabesque Floral Motif with Gold Relief and Spiraled Blue Dots. Crafted by Nakada Kingyoku III.
This incense burner is a work by the traditional craftsman, Nakada Kingyoku III, who has inherited the techniques of gold relief painting and blue dot application over three generations.
In the blue dot technique, where each dot is applied by hand, the dots tend to become irregular. However, the dots applied by Mr. Kingyoku are uniform and form spirals, giving the work a dignified and refined style.
A matte black base coat is evenly applied to the pre-fired porcelain and then fired. The pattern is drawn with red ochre, raised as if sculpted, and then gold paste is applied over it and fired again. Gold is difficult to handle, and a high level of skill is essential for smooth application. After that, the "Uzumaki-uchi" (spiraled dot application) is performed using a tool called "itchin" to draw the blue dots in a spiral pattern. This technique, where uniform dots are applied at equal intervals without a preliminary sketch, can truly be called a divine skill. Simply displaying it will elevate the atmosphere of the entire room.
