It is said to have originated in the Edo period, inspired by Ningyo Joruri (puppet theater), where bold makeup using red and black was first introduced. It later developed as an expressive style well-suited to the "Aragoto" (rough style) of Kabuki and is now almost complete as a formalized technique.
