スティールレインは2.5世代に分類される回転翼機型の可変ヘキサギアである。

前期型は当時すでに世界中から姿を消しつつあった航空機であるという点 以外に大きな特徴は無いながら、標準仕様として備えた２門の 20mmガトリング砲をはじめとした豊富な実弾兵装オプションは高い信頼性と対地攻撃能力を誇り、上空からの攻撃という特性との組み合わせは車輌や二足歩行を基本とした当時の第２世代ヘキサギア全般に対して非常に大きなアドバンテージ
