This is a live recording from the one-night-only "2024 All Japan Band Competition Required Pieces Concert," which attracts current wind ensemble students and many wind ensemble fans from all over the country!
The musical pieces, performed by the professional wind orchestra "Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra" under the passionate baton of Principal Conductor Takeshi Ooi, captivate the large audience that gathers each year.
As with last year, comments from each composer and explanations will be included in the booklet.
**Artist Profiles**
**◆ Takeshi Ooi (Principal Conductor)**
Born in 1974.
Began studying conducting under Yoko Matsuo at the age of 17.
Graduated from the Conducting Department of Tokyo University of the Arts, and completed the Master's program in Conducting at the same university in 1999. Studied under Hiroshi Wakasugi and Hiroyuki Iwaki.
Received the Ataka Prize in 1996. Studied under Levine, Masur, Germetti, and Karapetian at summer masterclasses in Switzerland and Italy.
Assistant Conductor of the Sendai Philharmonic Orchestra from 2000 to 2001. Studied at the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra from 2007 to 2009.
Won 2nd prize at the Antonio Pedrollo International Conducting Competition in 2008.
Served as Permanent Conductor of New Philharmonic Orchestra Chiba (now Chiba Symphony Orchestra) from 2009 to 2016, Conductor of the Yamagata Symphony Orchestra from 2009 to 2013, and Principal Conductor from 2013 to 2017. Currently, Principal Conductor of the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra.
He has also conducted most of the major orchestras in Japan, receiving high acclaim for his diverse repertoire and sincere conducting. He is actively involved in a wide range of fields, including contemporary works by emerging composers, wind ensemble, opera, and ballet.
Part-time lecturer (Wind Ensemble) at the Department of Instrumental Music, Faculty of Music, Tokyo University of the Arts. Visiting Professor at Shobi Music College.
**◆ Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra**
Formed in May 1960 (Showa 35) as the "Kosei Wind Ensemble" affiliated with Rissho Kosei-kai, and renamed "Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra" in 1973. Since April 2022, it has operated independently from Rissho Kosei-kai as a general incorporated association, Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra, and is a professional wind orchestra that Japan is proud of worldwide.
Through performances of a wide repertoire ranging from original wind ensemble works and classical arrangements to pops and popular music, they create high musical artistry and present wind ensemble performances that can be enjoyed by many, receiving acclaim at concerts throughout the country.
They have also been involved in numerous recordings and television/radio appearances, contributing to the improvement, popularization, and development of wind ensemble culture.
The orchestra celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2020. In January of the same year, Takeshi Ooi was appointed Principal Conductor, Thomas Sanderling as Special Guest Conductor, Norichika Iimori as Chief Guest Conductor, and Koichi Fujino as Pops Director.
