A masterpiece of youth cinema, directed by Hou Hsiao-hsien, director of "A City of Sadness" and "The Time to Live and the Time to Die," which vividly depicts a poignant love story against the backdrop of Taiwan's original landscape. This film is a masterpiece that not only defined Hou Hsiao-hsien himself but also globally established the image of Taiwanese New Cinema.
"A Dust in the Wind" (1987) is a culmination of Hou Hsiao-hsien's work, following his series of highly autobiographical films depicting the personal memories of Taiwanese people, such as "The Boys from Fengkuei" (1983), "A Summer at Grandpa's" (1984), and "The Time to Live and the Time to Die" (1985). After this, he broadened his perspective to Taiwan's history itself, which culminated in "A City of Sadness" (1989).
The screenplay was co-written by Wu Nien-jen, one of the central figures of Taiwanese New Cinema, based on his personal experiences, and Chu Tien-wen, an indispensable screenwriter for Hou's films. Lee Tien-lu, a national treasure master of traditional Taiwanese puppetry, who played the memorable grandfather role in the story, would go on to become a regular actor in Hou's films.
