The tatami surface is a durable, plain-weave made from domestic Japanese paper. The core material uses cushioning material, providing a slightly softer feel underfoot. The back has a non-slip surface.
This is a genuine type with insulation, made with the same material composition as traditional Japanese tatami. It has a moderate thickness and is durable. Since Japanese paper tatami surfaces contain no nutrients, they are resistant to mites and mold. They are also used as an alternative to interlocking mats and cork mats.
[Important Note on Checkerboard Laying]Checkerboard laying is a method of arranging tatami mats so that the grain direction alternates. When light hits the tatami grain, a shadow is cast. If the grain directions are different, variations in the darkness of these shadows will appear. These variations in shadow darkness make tatami mats of the same color appear in a checkerboard pattern. Depending on your environment, if the light hitting the tatami is weak, or if you look directly down at the tatami, the shadows may not be visible, and it may not appear as a checkerboard pattern.
