This Maneki Neko (beckoning cat) is finished with Echizen lacquerware, a craft passed down for 1500 years in Sabae City, Fukui Prefecture. Echizen lacquerware has been said to ward off misfortune since ancient times, and was extensively used on the armor and helmets of warriors during the Sengoku period. It has also been traditionally used in Japanese shrines and temples, including for their structures and torii gates.
At KODAI WORKS, lacquer artist Kodai Yamauchi imbues various Maneki Neko with wishes through a worldview called "Japanese Lacquer ART," which incorporates modern techniques.
By layering extremely thin coats of lacquer multiple times, transparency, depth, luster, and even shading are imparted to three-dimensional objects, breathing life into the lacquerware. These numerous lacquer layers, each imbued with meaning according to its technique and color, transform into wishes, allowing you to feel their energy through the form of the Maneki Neko.
The "Moyunuri" (Steaming Cloud Coating) technique mimics the process of water evaporating from the ground and rising to the heavens. It is imbued with energy and wishes for the positive elevation of all fortunes, including luck in career, romance, and business. This is a lacquer coating technique that allows you to feel its energy even more when you hold it.
Gold is imbued with the meaning of inviting good fortune, such as "financial luck," "prosperity," and "protection of the home." Pale pink carries the wish for "good relationships," "family harmony," and "harmony with others."
