[New, unopened item] The third release supervised by Riyō Sanmyaku, following "Yumi Kagura" and "Sakaishi Nage Odori," features the killer folk song "Kizaki Ondo," which will make you tremble with its dazzling boosted bass, released in both the original version by the local preservation society and a contemporary TRAP version. "Yagi-bushi," which was the first folk song to be recorded in Japan and is known as one of the largest dance classics in the folk song world, has its direct origin in the Bon Odori song "Kizaki Ondo," which is still passed down in Kizaki, Nitta Town, Ota City, Gunma Prefecture. In front of the power of this song, any folk music dance tune will fade away. Did they make a mistake adjusting it in the studio? A massive raw beat colored with distorted bass and strange reverberation that makes you doubt your ears. And the seductive lyrics that frankly depict the story of the "Hameshi-onna" (prostitutes) who lived in the nights of the pleasure quarters. This is not ghetto bass born in Chicago, nor trap born in Atlanta. It is Japanese folk music nurtured in the life of northern Kanto. This time, with the cooperation of the Kizaki Ondo Preservation Society, we have remastered and included the local recording version from 1980, which captures the hustle and bustle of the Bon Odori night. As a new initiative, we have also included a newly recorded Kizaki Ondo by Clark Naito. Clark Naito, an MC/trackmaker who raps over tracks sampling garage punk and is active in the Gorje scene, has a knack for connecting Bo Diddley and bass music with the term "3-minute R&R." The collaboration between Riyō Sanmyaku and Clark Naito has created a contemporary version of Kizaki Ondo, adding sweet synths to a modern trap beat. This is an extension of Riyō Sanmyaku's practice of "playing folk songs on turntables at full volume" at Soi48 parties, and a proposal for "a new way to enjoy folk songs." Played annually by local performers at the Bon-Odori traditional summer dance festival, it features unabashed lyrics about prostitution along with a rhythmic drive sure to appeal to fans of contemporary electronic genres as well as aficionados of traditional musics. The first track is a wildly echoing vocal version recorded in 1980, redolent of humid summer nights; the second track, recorded in 1981, is an instrumental version, both by the Kizaki Ondo Preservation Society. The other two tracks are extensions of tradition, with Tokyo-based producer Clark Naito' s 2018 revisions of “Kizaki Ondo" providing trap-inspired interpretations, with a vocal version using the original lyrics, along with a sweet instrumental take. This release, the third edition of the EM Records Japanese folklore series, directed by Riyo Mountains, is available on CD, LP and download, with English lyrics and notes, and rare photos.
