Since it is made of wood, there are no possession restrictions.
The origin of the name comes from a legend where a ghost of a smiling female spirit was cut down, and upon inspection the next morning, a stone stupa was found split in two. There are three theories about the samurai who is said to have cut it: the Nakajima Shuri-no-taifu and Kurita-no-taifu brothers, a vassal of Asano Nagamasa, and Koma Tango-no-kami, who served Rokkaku Yoshikata. Ownership passed from this samurai to Shibata Katsuie and was then passed down to his son, Shibata Katsutoshi. It is believed to have been presented to Toyotomi Hideyoshi by Niwa Nagahide, who defeated Katsutoshi, and then given to Kyogoku Taka-taka by Hideyori, Hideyoshi's son, as a token of gratitude for the peace treaty of the Winter Siege of Osaka.
It was then passed down through generations of the Kyogoku family, the lords of Marugame Domain, and during the Edo period, it was appraised as "Mudai" (an item of such supreme quality that its value cannot be assessed) by the Hon'ami family, renowned sword appraisers.
In 1940 (Showa 15), it was designated as an Important Art Object. After its registration as an Important Art Object, it moved around within Japan, but in 1997 (Heisei 9), Marugame City purchased it from a sword shop in Ginza. It is currently housed in the Marugame City Museum along with its exterior fittings, a gold-pear skin string-wrapped tachi koshirae made in the Edo period.
