A feature-length animated film directed by Hayao Miyazaki, released in 1989. Kiki, a 13-year-old girl, leaves her home with her black cat Jiji to train as a witch. While living in a new town and working as a delivery person, she meets various people, including Osono from the bakery where she is staying, and Tombo, a boy who dreams of flying. The story depicts her growth as a witch and as a person, even as she experiences setbacks.
The story begins with her setting off on her training journey, and this slightly lengthy scene immediately draws the viewer into the film. Then, as she takes off on her broom, Yumi Arai's "Rouge no Dengon" plays from a radio that is switched on, and the title finally appears. The timing is superb. The story and direction are meticulously crafted down to the finest details, making it a work that one will want to watch repeatedly. (Motoh Tanaka)
