[Keith Haring (1958-1990)] Born in 1958. A representative artist who, along with Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat, led American Pop Art. In the 1980s, his graffiti art, known as subway drawings, which he created on unused advertising boards in New York City subway stations, gained popularity among commuters. These comical and universally accessible doodles brought Haring fame. Haring seemed to view the subway as a "laboratory" for creating experimental works. His first major solo exhibition was held at the Art Center in Pittsburgh in 1978. He moved to New York in 1978 and studied painting at the School of Visual Arts. While exploring the possibilities of video and performance art, he also studied semiotics under Bill Beckley. He was also greatly influenced by the writings of William S. Burroughs, drawing inspiration from experiments involving the cross-referencing and interconnection of images. In the early 1980s, Haring held a solo exhibition at Club 57, documented by photographer Tseng Kwong Chi. During this period, "Radiant Baby" became his symbol. Haring's bold lines, vibrant colors, and dynamic forms convey strong messages of life and unity. Haring also participated in the Times Square Exhibition, where he first depicted animals and human faces. In the same year, his provocative collages, created by cutting up text copied by a copier in the style of the "New York Post," became a topic of discussion. By 1982, he had built friendly relationships with emerging artists of his generation, including Futura, Kenny Scharf, Madonna, and Basquiat. Between 1982 and 1989, Haring created over 50 public artworks in cities around the world. On February 16, 1990, Haring died from complications related to AIDS. Haring is memorialized on the AIDS Memorial Quilt. Although his style appears pop and flashy at first glance, it is imbued with Haring's own thoughts as a gay man and an AIDS patient, sounding a warning against discrimination and violence in contemporary society. Haring's themes included social and political issues such as AIDS prevention awareness, recognition of LGBTQ+ rights, nuclear disarmament, and anti-apartheid. His style was characterized by simple, bold color usage, often in a chalk outline format (the white lines used to mark the position of a victim at a crime scene).
