4-Car Old Type Passenger Car Set (Brown) 10-034 KATO Passenger Car

■ The Ohaf45 and Oha46 included in this set are improved versions of the Suhahu42 and Suha43. They are the final production models of the Suha43 series, which incorporated weight reduction measures, making them a lighter class than the Suha43. Following this, based on knowledge brought back by National Railways engineers who inspected the Swiss Federal Railways, the lightweight 10 series passenger cars were manufactured. Therefore, these cars occupy an intermediate position between the old type passenger cars and the 10 series. In addition to a small number manufactured in 1955, the final lot of Suha43, which had already been completed, also underwent experimental weight reduction measures, and some cars were later reclassified as Oha46. Perhaps because the manufacturing of the 10 series was already in sight, only 25 Ohaf45 cars were manufactured. Along with the steel-bodied passenger cars of the Oha60 series, which continued to be manufactured until the following year, they became the final lot of old type passenger cars inheriting the design of the pre-war Oha35 series. Weight reduction increases the permissible trailing load, offering the advantage of longer train formations. The Ohaf45 and Oha46 were preferentially used on steep mountain lines such as the Chuo Main Line and Shin'etsu Main Line, and on express trains where steam locomotives with limited pulling power hauled limited express trains.
