これまでのEF510同様に安定した走行性能、強力な牽引力を実現。単機でR370通過可能。
テールライト点灯ギミックも装備し、単機運転モード (両側点灯)、入換モード (前進時、片側点灯)牽引走行モード (テールライト消灯)に点灯パターンをスイッチで切替え可能。エンドレス走行のほか、別売のKadeeカプラー、アンカプラー線路を用いた、小スペースでの入換遊びもおススメ。
EF510同様、台車や車体の基本的な造形を再現しつつ、ユーザー取付部品は極力削減。部品破損などの抵抗感なく手軽に箱から出して走行を楽しめます。
製品のプロトタイプは75号機~136号機。 (テールライト外バメ式、ブロック式ナンバープレート、誘導員用ステップはスカート内側に取付)各地で配置された標準的な形態のEF81を再現します。
屋根上の配線は金属部品、碍子の色は緑色で再現。
メーカーズプレート (日立・三菱)選択式。
一般色は国鉄時代、昭和55~57年 (1980~1982)、敦賀第二機関区所属、ブルートレイン牽引時の姿がプロトタイプ。
