Shakyamuni Buddha is mainly enshrined as the principal object of worship in Zen Buddhism. Among the conditions for a Buddha image, it is said that the skin should be smooth and glossy, and in that sense, tsuge is a suitable material for Buddha statues. The technique of embedding glass beads in the face, called "ganemawari," is a traditional technique dating back to the late Heian period.
