The JR Hachikō Line connecting Hachioji and Takasaki runs through a tranquil rural area with trains and diesel cars. The line extends from Hachioji City through western Saitama Prefecture to Takasaki City. The official section is between Hachioji and Kuragano, and it is divided into electrified and non-electrified segments at Koma River. The operation system is also split between the electrified and non-electrified sections, with vehicles including 209 series, E231 series, and Kiha 110 series.
In the electrified section between Hachioji and Koma River, operations are integrated with the Kawagoe Line, and many trains run through to Kawagoe. In the non-electrified section between Koma River and Kuragano, all trains are directly connected to the Takasaki Line and run to Takasaki.
This work first involves riding the non-electrified section on Kiha 110 series. Departing from Takasaki, one of the major terminals in northern Kanto, you will see a vast vehicle depot and shunting yards as you proceed along the Takasaki Line. After passing Kuragano, the line diverges from the Takasaki Line and enters the single-track Hachikō Line.
The Hachikō Line is one of the few non-electrified lines in the Greater Tokyo area and is the only regional transportation line within Tokyo. It runs briskly with diesel engines through a clean, overhead wire-free landscape, featuring long bridges over the Kanryu River and Arakawa River, and connecting or running parallel to other lines such as the Tobu Tojo Line.
Enjoy the natural scenery that makes you forget the hustle and bustle, and arrive at Koma River just before the new station building is completed.
The Hachikō Line is scheduled to introduce new vehicles, the HB-E220 series, in the second half of fiscal year 2025, making the current Kiha 110 series operation a rare sight in the near future.
In the electrified section, ride the 209 series train departing from Kawagoe. After connecting with the Tobu Tojo Line and crossing the Seibu Shinjuku Line, the train proceeds through a line segment of the Kawagoe Line lined with residential areas.
As the non-electrified section of the Hachikō Line comes into view, the track curves left to stop at Koma River. After train crossing, the train enters the electrified section of the Hachikō Line.
The scenery changes to more urban landscapes, with overhead wires and different sounds of running, showing a different character from the non-electrified section, as the train heads south.
Crossing the border from Saitama Prefecture into Tokyo, the train passes through the former Yokota Tunnel, once the only tunnel on the Hachikō Line, running along the Yokota Air Base of the U.S. military.
At Haijima, it connects with the Ome Line, and after crossing the Tama River, a major river, the train arrives at the Chūō Line Rapid station.
