215系は1993年に登場した近郊電車です。同系は座席定員を増やし着席サービスを提供するため先頭車を除くすべての車両が2階建てとなっています。車体は211系のサロ212・213形をベースとし、編成の両端各2両が動力車となっています。中間車のうち2両はグリーン車となっています。10両編成4本が投入され、東海道線の「湘南ライナー」や「おはようライナー」、中央線の「ホリデー快速ビューやまなし」で活躍をしていましたが2021年3月のダイヤ改正で全車引退をしました。
