JNR 72/73 Series Commuter Train (Yokohama Line) 7-Car Set 97211/97212 TOMIX Electric Train
■ The 73 series electric train is an old, chocolate-colored train that ran through to Ofuna via direct service between the Yokohama Line and Negishi Line until 1979. Around the same period, the 73 series was making its final active service in the Tokyo metropolitan area on the parallel Nambu Line, the Tsurumi Line which shared rolling stock with the Nambu Line, and the Ome Line which connected with the Nambu Line at Tachikawa. In 1978, the Yokohama Line and Ome Line were retired with the replacement by the 103 series. The Nambu Line and Tsurumi Line were retired in 1980 with the replacement by the 101 series, and the 73 series retired from the Tokyo metropolitan area. The reason why old National Railways electric trains remained on these lines until the early 1980s, despite the Tokyo metropolitan area being an area where JNR could easily invest, is that the Yokohama Line and Nambu Line had no competing private railways, so passengers could be expected without investment. For the Nambu Line, Ome Line, and Tsurumi Line, they were private railways until World War II, and were considered important routes for transporting quicklime mined in Okutama to the Keihin industrial zone, as well as for connecting the Tokaido Line and Chuo Main Line, and for connecting with the Odakyu Line at Noborito, where rails were connected at the time. They were absorbed and merged into JNR as a national policy, and after the war, because they were considered outsiders to JNR, no investment was made, and they were used with old 73 series, or before that, 17-meter class pre-war electric trains were used to make do. It can be said that the lines where pre-war type trains and 73 series remained nationwide until the 1980s were all acquired lines from former private railways, and JNR tended to neglect investment in them.
