Under a feudal system where male supremacy and class distinctions were strictly enforced, Janggeum, despite her low social status, possessed a strong sense of justice and a strong will, becoming the highest-ranking royal chef in the palace. After many twists and turns, she became the first female physician in the Joseon Dynasty to be permitted to practice acupuncture and prepare herbal medicines. This drama depicts her eventful life, as she overcame numerous male physicians to become the sole royal physician to the king as a woman. The first half of the drama (Episodes 1-27) introduces information on food culture, which is of interest to modern people, focusing on royal cuisine and detailing its types and cooking methods. The latter half (Episodes 28-54) depicts Janggeum's turbulent half-life, while richly incorporating information on Oriental medicine based on herbal treatments. Each volume contains 3 episodes on 3 discs.
