■■■■■■■About the Kure District■■■■■■■
The Kure Naval Base was officially opened on July 1, Meiji 22 (1889), and facilities such as the Kure Marine Corps and Kure Naval Hospital were established within the same year. In Meiji 36 (1903), the Kure Naval Arsenal and Kure Naval Ordnance Factory were merged to establish the Kure Naval Works, and it developed as a major base for the Imperial Japanese Navy.
After the end of the war on August 15, Showa 20 (1945), the Kure Naval Base was closed with the abolition of the Ministry of the Navy on November 30 of the same year. On the other hand, at the end of the war, the US military dropped numerous mines in straits and bays with heavy traffic, including the Seto Inland Sea. The removal of these mines and ensuring safe passage were absolute conditions for post-war reconstruction. Therefore, despite the defeat, mine-clearing operations by mine-sweeping units continued uninterrupted.
On April 26, Showa 27 (1952), the Maritime Safety Force, the predecessor of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, was established. After the establishment of the Security Agency on August 1 of the same year and the renaming of the Maritime Safety Force to the Security Force, the JMSDF Kure District was newly established on July 1, Showa 29 (1954), simultaneously with the establishment of the Japan Defense Agency and the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. The Kure District General Department was established as its headquarters at the current location, which is the former site of the Kure Naval Base, and has continued to the present day.
