■■■■■■■ About the Kure District Force ■■■■■■■
On July 1, 1889, the Kure Naval District was established, and within the same year, Kure Naval Barracks and Kure Naval Hospital were also established. By the 36th year of the Meiji era, the Kure Naval Arsenal and Kure Ordnance Factory were established, developing as a major base of the Imperial Navy.
After the end of World War II on August 15, 1945, the Navy Ministry was abolished on November 30 of the same year, leading to the closure of the Kure Naval District. During the late stages of the war, the U.S. military dropped numerous mines in busy straits and bays, including the Seto Inland Sea, and their removal and ensuring safe navigation became essential for post-war reconstruction. Despite the defeat, minesweeping units continued their operations.
On April 26, 1952, the Maritime Safety Force, the predecessor of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, was established. Following the establishment of the Coast Guard Agency on August 1 of the same year and its renaming to the Maritime Safety Agency, and with the establishment of the Defense Agency and the creation of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force on July 1, 1954, the JMSDF Kure District Force was newly formed. Its headquarters, the Kure District General Command, was set up on the site of the former Kure Naval District, and it remains there to this day.
