Author Biography (from "BOOK Author Information"):
Masamichi Shida
Born December 1926. Became one of the last graduates of the Imperial Japanese Naval Academy (74th class) in March 1945. Commissioned as an Ensign in July 1945, just before being designated as a Kamikaze pilot. In August, while en route from the training base in Chitose to the sortie base in Ibaraki Prefecture, he survived the end of the war. After graduating from Kyoto University's Faculty of Economics, he worked for the Japan Coast Guard, the Maritime Safety Agency, and the Japan Air Self-Defense Force before joining Japan Airlines in 1958. He served as a captain from 1963 until his retirement in 1986. After retirement, he dedicated himself to anti-war and peace movements, including the movement against the construction of US military housing in Ikego, where he resides. In 2000, believing that war cannot be provoked if more ordinary people are weary of it, he formed the "Association of War-Weary Citizens" with friends and continues to be its representative, publishing a newsletter and holding lectures (this data was published at the time of this book's release).
