The tenth album, "I Inside the Old Year Dying," is filled with a sense of new beginnings. ●Produced by Flood & John Parish PJ Harvey's new album "I Inside the Old Year Dying," her first since the Grammy-nominated "The Hope Six Demolition Project," will be released by Partisan Records on July 7. The album was produced by her longtime collaborators Flood and John Parish. Indeed, Harvey has always ensured that her career takes her to new places at each stage. However, her new songs are bold and original even by her own standards. They are filled with a sense of new beginnings and combine her creative boldness with an open and comfortable feeling in the most attractive way. "Rest, comfort, solace, healing. I think it's timely for the current era," Harvey says about her new songs. The story of "I Inside the Old Year Dying" dates back six years, to the end of her tour for her previous album in 2017 and her state of mind immediately afterward. What she painfully realized was that somewhere in the endless cycle of albums and tours, she had lost her connection to music itself, and that realization was painfully indescribable. However, two things led her toward new songs, music, and sound directions. One was the memory of meeting artist and filmmaker Steve McQueen in Chicago during the "The Hope Six Demolition Project" period. His advice was, "Recall what you like about words, images, and music, abandon the concept of 'writing an album,' and focus on and play these three passions." The other was simply the act of "performing." Playing favorite songs by artists like Nina Simone and Bob Dylan on guitar or piano reaffirmed her passion for the art of music. When Harvey started writing new songs, it was more about the liberation of creating music for its own sake rather than returning to the cycle of album, tour, album, tour. She was drawing out the sense of creative freedom she felt during soundtrack and theater music activities in the past. At the same time, her perspective shifted from the major themes of "Let England Shake" and "The Hope Six Demolition Project" (war, politics, observing the world) to something more intimate and human. "The new songs came out of me in about three weeks. The studio was set up for live performance, and we only did that," Harvey says. If "I Inside the Old Year Dying" is a very tactile, human record, it is partly because almost everything on it is rooted in improvisation. This work contains a deep sense of uplift and salvation. "I think the album's theme is seeking, that is, the intensity of first love and seeking meaning. But what I feel from this album is love. I think that makes this work very welcoming, that is, open," Harvey says. ●PJ Harvey has attracted attention since the beginning of her career and is the only musician to have won the Mercury Prize more than twice (for "Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea" in 2001 and "Let England Shake" in 2011). As a poet, visual artist, musician, and songwriter, her works are noted for being vivid, absorbing, and strongly individual. Since the release of "The Hope Six Demolition Project," which reached number one on the charts in her home country of the UK, she has composed for stage and film, and recently her mini-series "Bad Sisters" by Sharon Horgan has received high praise.
