手塚治虫による、タイトルどおりの「マンガの描き方」の本。1977年初出のものを、文庫化。
著者が想定している主な読者は「今まで描いたこともなかった人」。落書きから始めればいい。紙と鉛筆さえあればいい。手塚は、繰り返しそう言う。そして、「省略、誇張、変形」という基本的な考え方やそれに基づく絵の描き方、実際にアイデアを「ひねり出す」ための「問題集」、など具体的なテクニックを惜しげもなく披露し、漫画の世界への扉をいっぱいに開いてみせる。例えば、「いろいろな顔をつくろう」と題した見開きページ。まゆげ、目、鼻、口の4つのパーツがそれぞれ8つのバリエーションで右ページに描かれ、左ページにはそれぞれを組み合わせて32パターンの顔の例を並べていく。これなら描けるかも…と著者の思惑通りについ手近な紙に落書きしたくなってくるような楽しさ、わかりやすさである。
