The second album from Big Red Machine, a project by Aaron Dessner (The National) and Justin Vernon (Bon Iver), 'How Long Do You Think It's Gonna Last?', is released.Includes tracks such as the single 'Renegade' featuring Taylor Swift.
● Aaron Dessner learned to play various instruments with his brother Bryce in the basement of their home in the suburbs of Cincinnati from childhood, and has always pursued emotional outlets and deep human connections through music. As a principal songwriter for The National, founder of various festivals, and collaborator on two Taylor Swift albums recorded at his own studio Long Pond in New York, Dessner has built a unique community of musicians through these activities. His rich spirit and desire to 'move music forward' can be most deeply felt in the second Big Red Machine album, 'How Long Do You Think It's Gonna Last?', which he started with Bon Iver's Justin Vernon in 2008.
● Big Red Machine, which Dessner says started for their own enjoyment, released their self-titled debut album in 2018.This album, which Dessner calls 'structured experimentalism', evolved from improvisation and focused on creating tracks that would work well live.In 2019, when Vernon visited Long Pond, new Big Red Machine material began to take shape. In the first week, songs such as 'Reese', '8:22am', and 'Latter Days' (the opener sung by Vernon and Anaïs Mitchell) were created, and the loss of childhood innocence and nostalgia sung about in 'Latter Days' became the defining theme of the entire album. In the following months, the two met as often as possible and continued working. In the early days of the pandemic, Taylor Swift approached Dessner, and the two began a collaboration that would later become 'Folklore' and 'Evermore'. During this period, which Dessner himself calls a 'creative blur', he worked on both Swift's and Big Red Machine's projects simultaneously.'It was a period of great growth for me. I learned a lot from Taylor and her process. I shared some unfinished Big Red Machine songs with her. Taylor was truly inspiring and gave very positive feedback and encouragement.Big Red Machine helped me understand how everything else I'm doing is connected,' says Dessner. The album features many collaborators and friends exchanging ideas, including Robin Pecknold of Fleet Foxes ('Phoenix'), Ben Howard and This Is The Kit ('June's a River'), Naeem ('Easy to Sabotage'), Sharon Van Etten, Lisa Hannigan, and Shara Nova of My Brightest Diamond ('Hutch'), and Taylor Swift ('Birch' and 'Renegade'. The latter was recorded in March 2021 at the Kitty Committee studio in Los Angeles, and in the same week, Swift and Dessner won Album of the Year at the Grammy Awards).'Dessner says, 'Everyone who participated in this record has openness, creative generosity, and an emotional quality that connects everything.' He also revealed that there are some songs, such as 'Brycie' and 'Magnolia', that he needed to sing himself. 'Having been in a band for a long time with someone else as the vocalist, you tend to rely on that. In fact, I loved Matt's (Berninger, The National's vocalist) voice and his words. But by singing 'Brycie' myself, I realized that Big Red Machine is a project where I can not only make songs with others but also complete songs on my own,' says Dessner.'Aaron played 'Brycie' for me a few years ago. I thought it was a beautiful song and that he should sing more. Aaron's voice really sounds good to me,' Vernon adds. 'Justin is incredibly talented, but he's also disruptive,' Dessner says, pointing to the opening sound of 'Birch' as a prime example. 'It's absolutely amazing, but when I first heard it, I was very surprised. Working with him, there are many moments like that where I'm surprised and my head hits the wall,' Dessner continues. 'Aaron's greatest talent as a collaborator is his ability to evolve and experiment with emotional sounds that come very naturally to him,' says Vernon.
● The album title, 'How Long Do You Think It's Gonna Last?', was given by Swift. She intuitively summed up the album's theme. 'A year ago, we hadn't even worked together. It's really cool that the community keeps expanding and everyone who contributed to this album is naturally connected to the emotions at the heart of the music,' says Dessner.
