The two composers featured on this album had a close relationship at the time. This is because Hofmeister was more prominent as a music publisher than as a composer, actively publishing and releasing works not only by himself but also by Mozart, Haydn, Clementi, and Beethoven. The composers surrounding Hofmeister were all good friends, with Beethoven even affectionately referring to Hofmeister as "dearest brother" in his letters. In those days, duets for violin and cello were widely loved for their suitable size for home performance. Hofmeister met this demand by composing and publishing works that were easy for amateurs to play. Beethoven's works, originally duets for clarinet and bassoon, were also arranged for violin and cello by the composer Hermann (1828-1907) of a slightly later period, and these also overflow with an intimate sound. The violin played by violinist Mills is a 1735 Januarius Gagliano instrument, producing a soft tone that conveys the atmosphere of the time. *Japanese obi not included.
