スモールワールドは、2人~5人のプレイヤーが、みんなが仲良く住めないくらい小さなゲームボード上の世界の征服と支配を競う、気軽に楽しめる、能天気な開拓ゲーム。ファンタジー世界の種族と特殊パワーの組み合わせを選び、プレイヤーは自らの帝国を拡大するために、時には貧弱な隣人を犠牲にしつつも、突き進まなければならない。勝つためには、広がりすぎた種族を見捨てて、新たな種族に乗り換えるタイミングを見極める必要がある。
プレイ人数ごとに異なるゲームボード、ゲームごとにランダム決まる14の種族と20種の特殊パワーの組み合わせなど、プレイするたびに展開が変わり、やり込みがいのある快作。300枚近いタイルやトークン類をきれいに収納できるトレイなど、コンポーネントの作りも特筆だ。
