The song cycle "Das Marienleben" is known as a work loved by pianist Glenn Gould, and many people may have encountered this piece while getting to know Gould. This song cycle is set to a series of poems by Austrian poet Rainer Maria Rilke, and faithfully depicts the life of Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ, from her birth to her death. Hindemith himself is said to have considered it "the best of my works to date." The first draft was written around 1923, but the 1948 revised version here is said to have slightly gentler expressions than the youthful first draft, and also reduces the burden on the singer. A beautiful performance by Harnish and Schulz, combining gentleness and serenity.
