Sonnentor was established in 1988 in Waldviertel, northern Austria.

Waldviertel, Johannes Gutmann’s hometown, is located in one of Austria’s coldest regions, at an altitude of 500 to 1,000 meters.

Winter temperatures can drop below -25°C.

While the environment is harsh, it is less prone to insect infestation, making it suitable for organic cultivation. The cold also strengthens the herbs, resulting in plants with particularly good aroma.

Starting from a small village, the herbal teas gained worldwide attention due to their high quality and strong philosophy.

Today, they are used in top hotels worldwide and are loved in approximately 45 countries as a leading European herbal tea brand.

Sonnentor’s Commitment

- Uses raw materials cultivated through biodynamic farming.

Herbs are grown according to lunar cycles, and only high-quality tea leaves are carefully hand-picked.

All parts of the plants—flowers, fruits, leaves, and roots—are incorporated as ingredients.

- Does not use preservatives or artificial fragrances.

Herbal teas and herbs harvested and processed by hand are of very high quality, with natural aromas fully preserved, eliminating the need for artificial fragrances.

Tea bags are made from 100% biodegradable, unbleached recycled paper.

Threads are unbleached cotton without oil coating.

Outer boxes are made from biodegradable cellophane material.

At Sonnentor’s farms, local people are involved in growing and harvesting herbs. This cultivation energizes small villages and has developed into an international industry.

Currently, there are over 150 contracted farms within Austria, and for ingredients difficult to cultivate domestically, overseas contracted farms are used.

Each year, Sonnentor’s President Gutmann and the quality control team visit the farms to check quality and build mutual trust.

*Note:* The plant-based cellophane that originally wrapped Sonnentor products has been well received for being environmentally friendly. However, starting in 2021, Sonnentor has phased out cellophane to become more sustainable.

The company has improved individual packaging by coating the inside with a thin plant-based film to preserve the aroma and flavor of the herbs, even without cellophane.
