Sonnentor was established in 1988 in Waldviertel, northern Austria.

Waldviertel, the hometown of founder Johannes Gutmann, is located in one of Austria’s coldest regions, at an altitude of 500 to 1,000 meters.

Winter temperatures can drop below -25°C.

Despite the harsh environment, it is suitable for organic cultivation because pests find it difficult to thrive, and the cold climate helps herbs grow with especially good aroma.

Sonnentor’s Commitment

- Uses raw materials cultivated by biodynamic farming

Herbs are cultivated according to the lunar cycle, and only high-quality tea leaves are carefully hand-picked.

All parts of the plants—flowers, fruits, leaves, and roots—are incorporated as ingredients.

- No preservatives or artificial fragrances are used

Herbal teas and herbs harvested and processed by hand retain their natural aroma, eliminating the need for artificial fragrances.

- No chemical processing in packaging

Tea bags are made from 100% biodegradable, unbleached recycled paper.

Threads are made from unbleached cotton without oil coating.

Outer packaging is made from biodegradable cellophane material.

- Community-based initiatives

At Sonnentor’s farms, local people are involved in growing and harvesting herbs. This cultivation energizes small villages and has developed into an international industry. Currently, over 150 contracted farmers operate within Austria, and for ingredients difficult to cultivate domestically, overseas contracted farmers are involved.

Each year, Sonnentor’s CEO Johannes Gutmann and the quality control team visit the farms to check quality and build mutual trust.

- Packaging designed by picture book artists

Many of Sonnentor’s charming herbal tea packages are illustrated by German and Austrian picture book artists, conveying messages embedded in the teas.

*Note:* The plant-derived cellophane that originally wrapped Sonnentor products was environmentally friendly and well-received for many years. However, starting in 2021, Sonnentor has phased out cellophane to become more sustainable. The products are now individually wrapped with improved packaging that includes a thin plant-based film inside to preserve the aroma and flavor of the herbs. The transition is ongoing, so some products may still have the previous packaging. We appreciate your understanding.
