Sonnentor was established in 1988 in Waldviertel, northern Austria.

Waldviertel, Johannes Gutmann’s hometown, is located in Austria’s coldest region, at an altitude of 500 to 1,000 meters.

Temperatures can drop below minus 25°C in winter.

While the environment is harsh, it is less prone to pests, making it suitable for organic cultivation. The cold climate also helps herbs grow with particularly good aroma, making this land ideal for herbal cultivation.

Starting from a small village, the herbal tea gained attention worldwide due to its high quality and strong philosophy.

Today, it is used in top hotels around the world and is loved in approximately 45 countries globally as a leading herbal tea brand in Europe.

Sonnentor’s Commitment

- Uses raw materials cultivated through biodynamic farming

Herbs are cultivated according to the lunar cycle, and only high-quality tea leaves are carefully hand-picked.

All parts of the plants—flowers, fruits, leaves, and roots—are incorporated as ingredients.

- No preservatives or artificial fragrances are used

Herbal teas and herbs harvested and processed by hand are of very high quality, with natural aromas fully preserved, eliminating the need for artificial fragrances.

- No chemical processing in packaging

Tea bags are made from 100% biodegradable, unbleached recycled paper.

The thread is made from unbleached cotton without oil coating.

Outer packaging is made from biodegradable cellophane material.

- Community-based initiatives

At Sonnentor’s farms, local people are involved in growing and harvesting herbs. This cultivation brings vitality to small villages and has developed into an international industry. Currently, over 150 contracted farms are within Austria, and for ingredients difficult to cultivate domestically, overseas contracted farms are used.

Each year, Sonnentor’s CEO Johannes Gutmann and the quality control team visit the farms to check quality and build mutual trust.

Many of Sonnentor’s herbal tea packages are illustrated by children’s book authors from Germany and Austria, conveying the messages embedded in the herbal teas.

*Note:* The plant-derived cellophane used to wrap Sonnentor products has been popular for being environmentally friendly. However, starting in 2021, Sonnentor has phased out the use of cellophane to become more sustainable. The individual packaging has been improved to maintain the aroma and flavor of the herbal tea by applying a thin plant-based film inside the wrapper. Product updates are being implemented gradually, so there may be some products with mixed packaging. We appreciate your understanding.
