HENRIMATISSE(アンリ・マティス)
1869年、北フランスのル・カトー・カンブレジに生まれる。1887ー88年パリで法学を学ぶ。卒業後法律事務所の書記となる。1892年、父親の猛反対を説得して、アカデミｰ・ジュリアンに入学し、1898年パリ美術学校に入学し、ギュスタヴ・モロｰの教室で学ぶ。この教室でジョルジュ・ルオーやアルベール・マルケなど出会う。1898年アメリー・パレイルと結婚。続く数年は制作の上でも経済的にも最悪の状況。マティスは家族の貧弱な収入を補うため画家の他、装飾家として仕事につく。
1911年モロッコに行き、風景や人間に発想源を見出だす。「オダリスク」の連作がはじまる。1920年ストラヴィンスキーのバレエ「ナイチンゲールの歌」の舞台装置や衣装をデザインする。1943年ヴァンスに移住。画家としてだけではなく、彫刻家としても制作を続ける。1948年初めての主要な切り紙絵（グアッシュ、デクペ）、室内画のシリーズで彼の絵画の仕事は終わりを告げる。1947-52年ヴァンスのロザリオ礼拝堂の装飾を依頼される。1951年切り紙絵の制作。1952年ル・カトー・カンブレジにマティス美術館が開館される。1954年ヴァンスの自宅で死去。享年84歳。
