is carefully raised at the Imperial Palace's Momijiyama Sericulture Station and is called a "phantom cocoon."
Mr. Akiyama Masakazu has realized Koishimaru sericulture,
spins the thread by hand, and creates various works using Koishimaru silkworms.
Brief biography of Mr. Akiyama Masakazu
Born in 1941 in Naha City, Okinawa Prefecture.
Founded "Aya Hand-Spun Dyeing Workshop" in Aya Town, Miyazaki Prefecture, in 1966.
Received the Gold Prize at the 2nd Seibu Workshop Exhibition in 1967.
Selected for the Japan Traditional Craft Exhibition in 1968.
Recognized as a full member of the Japan Craftsmanship Association in 1972.
Performed demonstrations in front of Emperor Showa and Empress in 1973.
Achieved initial success in indigo dyeing using Japanese shellfish in 1982.
Designated as a Miyazaki Prefecture Traditional Craftsman in 1984.
Selected for the 37th Japan Traditional Craft Exhibition in 1990; work "Kaleidoscope" purchased by the Agency for Cultural Affairs.
Completed weaving with Koishimaru silkworms in 1991.
Selected for the 42nd Japan Traditional Craft Exhibition in 1995; work "Kagerou" purchased by the Agency for Cultural Affairs.
Received the Excellent Technician (Living National Treasure) designation and award.
Invited to the Autumn Imperial Garden Party at Akasaka Imperial Grounds in 1996.
Invited by Okinawa Prefectural University of Arts to become a professor in the Faculty of Fine Arts and Crafts in 1997.
Presented Koishimaru thread and indigo-dyed interior works to Princess Noriko in 1998.
Attended the Pacific Islands Summit Conference in 2000; visited the wives of 17 heads of state of participating countries.
Recognized as a contributor to Aya Town in 2002.
Gave an explanation of his kimono when the Emperor visited Aya Town in 2004.
Received the Miyazaki Prefecture Cultural Award in 2005.
Received the Yellow Ribbon Medal in 2006.
Designated as an intangible cultural asset of Aya Town for natural indigo dyeing techniques in 2008.
He is the son of Mr. Tokiwa Akiyama, who created Ryukyu Jofu.
