Kani-san is a dyeing and weaving workshop with a history of 250 years since its founding in the first year of Hōreki (1751).
It is the only dyeing and weaving workshop in Echigo Katakai.
Katakai cotton has a unique commitment to the threads used and the weaving method,
with both warp and weft using single threads, and three types of threads of different thicknesses are arranged systematically in the warp.
Only the parts with the thickest threads contact the skin, so the surface does not become flat,
preventing sticking to the skin and achieving a smooth, gentle feel when worn.
Because the thick and thin threads are woven simultaneously, the thin threads are more prone to breaking,
requiring careful adjustment of the loom and thread management, making it a delicate and labor-intensive fabric.
From the moment you wear it, and as you wear it repeatedly, the hem drape gradually becomes less noticeable,
and it becomes a kimono that responds naturally to movement.
The more you wear it, the more it becomes familiar to your body, and the gentle, gauze-like texture is unique to Katakai cotton.
It is one of the charms that captivate kimono enthusiasts and never let go.
Among cotton kimonos, Katakai cotton has a relatively cool and light texture.
It is generally said to be suitable for wear except during the peak of summer, but
the fabric is cool and breezy enough to be worn as a yukata in summer.
It is dyed with 'shibu' liquid obtained from persimmon tannin, which is aged for over two years,


using naturally fermented clear liquid for dyeing, called 'kaki-shibu-zome'.
The depth and unique flavor brought by kaki-shibu dyeing are due to the use of natural blessings in their pure form.
The texture unique to hand weaving and the deep, rich black-brown color from kaki-shibu dyeing fascinate people.
