The condition of the kimono has light stains on the back body and collar area as shown in the close-up images, but
other than that, there are no particularly noticeable stains or dirt, and it is in very good condition.
The Saigo pattern that has been passed down to the present day is said to have been created in the Taisho era.
At that time, from the late Meiji period to the Taisho era, the shime machine was researched, developed, and put into practical use,
and with the establishment of a pattern registration system for kasuri (ikat) patterns, various patterns were devised.
Each village began to compete to create new patterns and more technically demanding patterns.
Among them, a single pattern was developed.
A design, a shime machine (kasuri tying), weaving, and a division of labor in Oshima Tsumugi, requiring skilled craftsmen, make it the highest quality pattern.
The island people named such a 'quality and technique excellent' pattern,
after Saigo Takamori, a pride of the island, the 'Saigo pattern'.
Even over 100 years later, the technique is still inherited, and with pride and attachment, it continues to be made to honor Saigo Takamori's name.
This is a very high-quality item.
