Authentic Chikuzen Hakata-ori is
a silk fabric produced in and around Hakata Ward, Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture.
It is woven with geometric patterns based on Buddhist ritual implements, the Dokko and Hanazara.
Because Nagamasa Kuroda, the lord of the Chikuzen domain during the Edo period, presented it as a gift to the Shogunate,
it is also called Hakata Kenjo or Kenjo Hakata.
It is woven in a style called warp-rib weave (tate-une ori), where the horizontal ribs appear prominent.
Because 30 to 60 thin warp threads are used, it has body and stiffness,
the texture is firm, and it has a lustrous feel.
It is said to be an easy-to-tie obi that fastens securely and does not easily lose its shape.
It is a very high-quality masterpiece.
