400 years ago, the wife wove a jōfu (a type of fine woven fabric) for her husband, who was promoted in recognition of his achievements by the Ryukyu Kingdom,
and as a token of gratitude, presented it to the king, which is considered the beginning of Miyako jōfu.
It is full of elegant dignity and was designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Japan in Showa 53 (1978).

Miyako jōfu begins with the process of thread making,
carefully cultivating the ramie fibers and splitting them finely using fingers or nails,
then skillfully twisting and spinning them into yarn by hand, following a pattern,
dyed with natural dyes such as indigo and fukugi, and carefully handwoven,
finished with a process called "washing," which includes sizing and kinuta pounding (a traditional pounding method),
making it a supreme handcrafted item.
Furthermore, it is extremely lightweight, with excellent elasticity and luster, resulting in a superb product.
The cool, exceptional feel on the skin is Miyako jōfu.
Even skilled artisans can only weave about 30cm per day with intricate kasuri (ikat) patterns,
woven into a refined and beautiful hana-bishi (flower diamond) layered pattern on a deep indigo background.
